PBF

Faculty of Food Technology and Biotechnology

The Challenge

The Faculty of Food Technology and Biotechnology is Croatia's leading scientific, research, and teaching institution in the fields of biotechnology, food technology, and nutrition. An institution of that standing deserves a visual identity that matches its expertise — modern, flexible, and capable of meeting all the demands of contemporary communication, from student materials to international scientific conferences.

Concept & Solution

Three interlocking circles that together form the initials PBF — deceptively simple, but precisely considered. Each circle on its own evokes laboratory sophistication: process, analysis, flow, and research. Together they form a symbol that is simultaneously a letter, an idea, and a visual representation of what the faculty does. The mark is single-colour — making it easily applicable across all surfaces and contexts — but carries a second layer of possibility: it can be filled with patterns that connect thematically to the faculty's programmes. Microbiological textures, food structures, process visualisations — an identity that can transform depending on context without losing its recognisability or character. The typographic component was designed with the flexibility to accommodate variations of the full faculty name without disrupting the core idea — essential for an institution that communicates across multiple levels, from internal departments to sub-identities for anniversaries and special programmes.

The Result

An identity that students and faculty embraced quickly and unanimously — which in an academic environment is no small achievement. Ten years in use, and still fresh and contemporary. A system that can be extended with new sub-identities whenever needed, without compromising the original concept. A good identity doesn't age — it grows.
